Backed by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Mindy Kaling and Guneet Monga Kapoor, a story about sisterhood and resilience makes it to the Oscars.
It was a proud moment for India as Anuja, a Netflix-backed short film, secured a nomination for Best Live Action Short Film at the 97th Academy Awards. Directed by Adam J. Graves and supported by an impressive lineup of producers including Mindy Kaling, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, the film showcases the resilience of Indian storytelling on a global platform.

Set in the bustling streets of Delhi, Anuja explores the struggles of its titular character, a young garment factory worker portrayed by Sajda Pathan, and her sister Palak, played by Ananya Shanbhag. With its poignant narrative of family and sacrifice, the film reflects the small, everyday triumphs of those navigating harsh realities.

The project also features producers such as Suchitra Mattai, Krushan Naik, and Shine Global Inc., who are known for their award-winning work. Anuja additionally highlights the contributions of Salaam Baalak Trust, a nonprofit empowering street children, further rooting the story in authentic social advocacy.
Expressing her pride, Priyanka Chopra Jonas shared, “This film is a beautiful reminder of the power of storytelling — how it can shine a light on love, family, and resilience in the most authentic way. I’m so proud of Adam J. Graves for his vision and deeply moved by the brilliant performances of Sajda Pathan and Ananya Shanbhag, who have poured their hearts into bringing these characters to life.” The actor-producer added that telling meaningful stories that resonate with audiences is what drives them all.
And for Guneet Monga Kapoor, Anuja marks her third Oscar nomination, following the success of The Elephant Whisperers and Period: End of Sentence. “It is a privilege to share the story of Anuja, representing the work of Salaam Baalak Trust India — the voice of countless youth who bravely face formidable circumstances everyday,” she said in a statement. Adding, “Even through unimaginable odds, they show us there is reason to smile."
