Oscars 2026: Dharmendra Named in In Memoriam List, Omitted From Broadcast

Veteran Indian actor Dharmendra, who passed away at 89 last year, was named in the Academy Awards’ official In Memoriam list on Monday morning, acknowledging his contributions to the world of cinema. At the 98th Academy Awards held in Los Angeles, the In Memoriam segment recognised industry figures who died over the past year. While the Academy’s online In Memoriam list included Dharmendra’s name, his image and tribute were not featured in the segment broadcast on television, which focused largely on major Hollywood figures. Manoj Kumar, another Indian icon who died last year, was also omitted from the segment.

The 98th Academy Awards concluded on Monday morning with One Battle After Another taking home best picture. Michael B. Jordan won best actor for his performance in Sinners, the genre-blending period film written and directed by Ryan Coogler. The best actor category also featured a competitive slate of contenders including Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, Leonardo DiCaprio for One Battle After Another, Ethan Hawke for Blue Moon and Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent. Jessie Buckley, meanwhile, won for her performance in Hamnet, beating fellow nominees Rose Byrne for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Kate Hudson for Song Sung Blue, Renate Reinsve for Sentimental Value and Emma Stone for Bugonia. Sentimental Value won the Oscar for Best International Feature.
