Oscars: Kamal Haasan, Ayushmann Khurrana, Payal Kapadia Invited To Join Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
While Kamal Haasan and Ayushmann Khurrana have been invited to join the Actors' Branch, Payal Kapadia has received an invitation from the Writers' Branch.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (which conducts the Oscars) has announced that it is extending invitations to join the organisation to 534 artists and executives across the world, which includes superstar Kamal Haasan, actor Ayushmann Khurrana and Cannes Grand Prix-winning filmmaker Payal Kapadia.
The 'Oscars' Class of 2025' features actors, comedians, cinematographers, directors, and musicians, among others, who have "distinguished themselves by their contributions to motion pictures," a press release stated.
While Haasan, recently seen in Mani Ratnam's Thug Life, and Khurrana have been invited to join the Actors' Branch, Kapadia has received an invitation from the Writers' Branch. The filmmaker shot to global glory with her acclaimed All We Imagine as Light.
Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang said in a joint statement, "We are thrilled to invite this esteemed class of artists, technologists, and professionals to join the Academy. Through their commitment to filmmaking and to the greater movie industry, these exceptionally talented individuals have made indelible contributions to our global filmmaking community.”

According to the official website of the Academy, the membership process for its 19 branches and one membership classification is conducted by sponsorship, not application. The website further stated that the membership selection is based on professional qualifications, with "an ongoing commitment to representation, inclusion and equity remaining a priority."
Of the 2025 invited class, 41 per cent are women, 45 per cent belong to underrepresented communities, and 55 per cent are from 60 countries and territories outside the United States.
