The actor-filmmaker lends his voice to ‘Singari’, a track from Keerthiswaran’s upcoming romantic action-comedy 'Dude'
Actor and filmmaker Pradeep Ranganathan is set to add another feather to his cap — this time as a playback singer. The Love Today director-actor has made his singing debut in Dude, an upcoming Tamil-language romantic action comedy written and directed by Keerthiswaran and produced by Mythri Movie Makers.
The film, starring Ranganathan and Mamitha Baiju in lead roles alongside R. Sarathkumar, Hridhu Haroon and Rohini, follows two youngsters who run an event management company in Chennai. The song, titled Singari, is composed by Sai Abhyankkar with lyrics by Sanjay Semvi and female chorus by The Indian Choral Ensemble (Chamber).
“Singing has always been on the cards. I’ve always wanted to sing. I have liked singing since childhood. When I was directing movies I wanted to sing!” says Ranganathan.
Having written two songs for his 2019 directorial Comali and all the songs in Love Today (2022), Ranganathan reveals he would often record himself singing the lyrics before sharing them with composers. “I would sing the lyrics to send to the music directors so that they would hear my singing and give me an opportunity,” he says with a laugh.
He recalls a moment when composer Yuvan Shankar Raja offered him the chance to sing, not for his vocal skills, but for his evident passion. “At one point Yuvan sir asked me if I wanted to sing. Not because I sang well, but because he understood that I was interested in singing. But I felt it was of no use if I sang at that point of time, because I’d get more publicity if Yuvan sir or Sid Sriram sang that song,” Ranganathan says.
The opportunity, however, came back around when Dude’s music director Sai Abhyankkar and director Keerthiswaran approached him for Singari. “I had buried my wish of becoming a singer, but Sai and Keerthi asked me if I wanted to sing for Dude — they already knew I liked to sing,” he says.
Ranganathan admits he tried to appear unfazed, but was overjoyed inside. “I wanted to give them the space to even replace my voice so I told them that I’ll sing and they can keep it if it sounds good or replace it if they think it doesn’t work. The film is more important,” he says.
With a laugh, he adds, “Now it is also useful for publicity if I sing.”
Recording Singari, he says, was pure joy. “I turned into a child. I don’t remember the last time I had so much fun for four or five hours. It’s a pure dopamine hit,” Ranganathan says.
Dude is produced by Mythri Movie Makers, the banner behind several high-profile Telugu and Tamil projects, and is expected to release later this year.
