Ram Gopal Varma, Mani Ratnam and Shekhar Kapur came together to produce Shah Rukh Khan's 'Dil Se,' but why was it their first and last collaboration?
In 1998, a month after Ram Gopal Varma's game-changing gangster drama Satya hit screens, the filmmaker had another big-ticket release lined up: Shah Rukh Khan-Manisha Koirala starrer Dil Se. The romantic drama saw three visionary filmmakers joining hands to produce the film: Varma, Shekhar Kapur, and Mani Ratnam, who also directed it.
But the collaboration dissolved even before the film's first show played.
"It wasn't due to ego," Varma said, when The Hollywood Reporter India asked him about the falling out of the three on their maiden production. The filmmaker said banding together was Kapur's idea, which, theoretically, seemed the best thing to do. But it wasn't to be, as Varma soon realised working together could be a nightmare.

"It was Shekhar's idea because the corporates were slowly coming in. In theory, it sounded good to me. Once we announced Dil Se, I realised this may not work and I was the one who broke it (the group). Shekhar makes one film in six years, Mani makes one film in two years, and I make three films in one year! So how the f*** is the math going to work?" Varma said.
While the numbers got in the way, the internal discontentment between the three over their production choices also didn't help.
Varma shared how he and Ratnam were unhappy about Kapur when he decided to make a film with a director the duo didn't like; Varma knew if they continued like this, their friendship would crumble.

"Shekhar wanted to make a film with some director, who Mani and I didn't like. So we were backbiting and bitching about Shekhar. I said that we don't need each other; we are all strong-minded independent voices. How can three people make one dish? That would've broken our friendship. But since we had already announced Dil Se, we went ahead with the film," says Varma.
"However, Shekhar and I weren't involved with Dil Se creatively or financially. Both of us saw the film for the first time along with the audience! We went ahead with it purely for the sake of our friendship," he added.
Varma was in Mumbai to celebrate the re-release of Satya, where he also met his cast and crew. including actor Manoj Bajpayee and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap. Varma is gearing up to announce his next Hindi theatrical film soon.
