Shyam Benegal Passes Away At The Age Of 90

Known for films such as 'Nishant, 'Manthan,' 'Mammo' and 'Zubeidaa,' Benegal was regarded as the pioneer of parallel cinema in India

Veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal, regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers in the country, passed away on Monday evening. He was 90.

Family sources confirmed that Benegal breathed his last at Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai Central where he was battling a chronic kidney-related ailment.

Earlier this month, actor Shabana Azmi had posted a picture with Benegal and Naseeruddin Shah on the filmmaker's 90th birthday on December 14. She captioned the image, "On Shyam Benegal's 90th birthday with my co-actor of many films and my favorite actor Naseeruddin Shah. Why aren't more people casting us together?!!"

Benegal was dubbed as the pioneer of parallel cinema in the '70s after he helmed four consecutive acclaimed feature films— Ankur (1973), Nishant (1975), Manthan (1976) and Bhumika (1977). The filmmaker earned further accolades for the Doordarshan historical drama Bharat Ek Khoj (1988).

His last directorial was the 2023 feature Mujib: The Making of a Nation, which was based on the life of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father and first president of Bangladesh.

He is survived by his wife Nira Benegal and his daughter, costume designer Pia Benegal.

Throughout his illustrious career, Shyam Benegal was a recipient of several honours, including 18 National Film Awards, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award— India's highest award in the field of cinema—the Padma Shri as well as the Padma Bhushan.
