Celebrated Indian singer Zubeen Garg, known for iconic tracks like 'Ya Ali' and others, passed away after a tragic scuba diving accident in Singapore. He was 52. According to reports, Garg was in Singapore to attend the North East India Festival as a Cultural Ambassador. He was scheduled to perform at the festival on Saturday.
An Assamese born in Meghalaya, Zubeen Garg achieved musical fame in multiple languages including Hindi, Bengali and Assamese. He was loved for his lush, confident vocalising that made him a rage. His playback career spanned multiple decades and industries. Though he was singing in Bollywood films from the mid-90s, 2006's 'Ya Ali' from Gangster brought him widespread stardom.
Tributes poured in from across the nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X, "Shocked by the sudden demise of popular singer Zubeen Garg. He will be remembered for his rich contribution to music. His renditions were very popular among people across all walks of life. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti."
Actor and fellow Assamese Adil Hussain paid his tributes: “Devastated and shocked by the news of Zubeen Garg’s sudden death in an accident in Singapore. His contribution to Assamese music and culture is extraordinary. He will live amongst us through his songs. Dear Zubeen, I remember you with lots of love and fondness. May his singing soul rest in peace.”
Papon, another cultural icon from Assam, wrote: “This is so shocking! The voice of a generation! Gone too soon. Lost a friend. Lost a brother. A big void. Praying for a peaceful journey of his soul.
Composer Vishal Dadlani expressed his grief, writing, “I can’t believe this. My brain is in shock, my heart is shattered! #ZubeenGarg has left a void I don’t think anyone else can ever fill. He was a true megastar, a man of his people, a true lover of Assam, loved by fans to a level where their pain today is just unimaginable. My deepest condolences to his family and to everyone who was touched by this larger-than-life legend. If anyone really LIVED Rock and Roll, it was Zubeen.”
Gangster (2006) composer Pritam paid his respects with: “Zubeen Garg losing his life in an accident is just the most terrible and saddest news. I’m still trying to come to terms with it. My deepest condolences to Garima and his family. Om Shanti.” Singer Armaan Malik tweeted, “I am devastated and in disbelief. May his soul rest in peace.. #ZubeenGarg.”
Garg passed away in the ICU of the Singapore General Hospital on Friday, September 19. The cause of his death is reported as a seizure attack following breathing difficulties.
