Veteran Tamil scholar, celebrated orator and cultural icon Solomon Pappaiah died on Friday (September 11, 2026), aged 90. He was undergoing treatment for an age-related illness at a private hospital in Madurai.
Pappaiah was best known for his Pattimandram appearances, where he moderated televised Tamil debates on socially relevant issues, bringing together his scholarship, sharp wit and characteristic sense of humour. Over the course of his career, he became one of the most recognisable voices in Tamil literary and cultural discourse, with a following that extended beyond academic circles.
Among the many honours he received were the Kalaimamani award in 2000 and the Padma Shri in 2021.
Born in Madurai, Pappaiah also had a brief but memorable association with Tamil cinema. He appeared in films including Pudhu Varusham (1992), Boys (2003), Yes Madam (2003) and Shankar's Sivaji: The Boss (2007), starring Rajinikanth. His appearance in Sivaji, in particular, brought his distinctive humour and public persona to a wider film audience.
Pappaiah also maintained a long association with The American College in Madurai, where he served from 1961 to 1994 and headed the Department of Tamil.
Following news of his death, director Shankar paid tribute to the scholar, recalling the pleasure he took in watching Pappaiah's Pattimandram programmes.
"Feeling deeply saddened to hear about the demise of respected Solomon Pappaiah Avargal. What a great Tamil scholar and orator he was! I always looked forward to and thoroughly enjoyed his Pattimandram programmes during every Tamil festival," Shankar wrote.
The filmmaker added, "It is truly heartbreaking to know that I will miss his wonderful humour, wit, and enlightening judgments. His contribution to Tamil language and culture will always be remembered. My heartfelt prayers for the beautiful soul. May he rest in peace."
Pappaiah had previously worked with Shankar on Boys, the 2003 film starring Siddharth, Genelia D'Souza, Bharath, S. Thaman, Manikandan and Nakul.
Rajinikanth, who shared the screen with Pappaiah in Sivaji: The Boss, also mourned his death. "I pray to God that the soul of the great Tamil personality, Professor Solomon Pappaiya, may rest in peace. He was instrumental in taking the Pattimandram (Tamil debate forum), which had traditionally been conducted at a literary level among the educated, to the common people and making it widely popular among the masses.."
