Prime Video has formally launched production on its long-gestating Tomb Raider series, unveiling a first-look image of Sophie Turner as Lara Croft and signalling a renewed push to reframe one of pop culture’s most durable action heroines for a new generation.

The image confirms Turner’s casting as the globe-trotting archaeologist, presenting a version of Lara Croft that leans closer to the character’s video game origins than her previous cinematic incarnations. Functional, battle-ready and stripped of excess glamour, this iteration suggests a return to the character’s core identity: an adventurer defined as much by intellect and resilience as by physical prowess.

Turner, best known for her decade-long turn as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, leads a sprawling ensemble that blends established screen veterans with newly introduced characters. Sigourney Weaver joins the series as Evelyn Wallis, an original role described as a powerful figure with a keen interest in harnessing Lara’s unique skill set. Jason Isaacs appears as Atlas DeMornay, Lara’s uncle, while long-time fans will recognise Winston, the Croft family butler, played here by Paterson Joseph. Martin Bobb-Semple takes on Zip, Lara’s tech-savvy ally, alongside a cast that includes Celia Imrie, Bill Paterson, Sasha Luss and John Heffernan.

The series is created and written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who also serves as executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Chad Hodge. Jonathan Van Tulleken is directing and executive producing. Amazon has positioned the project as more than a standalone adaptation, with plans to align the show narratively with future Tomb Raider video games, creating a shared storytelling ecosystem across mediums.

Produced by Story Kitchen, Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios, the Tomb Raider series arrives amid a broader revival of the franchise. Two new games are currently in development, slated for release in 2026 and 2027, underscoring Amazon’s long-term investment in the property.
