The JP Thuminad-directed social-horror has emerged as a shot in the arm for the Kannada film industry.
Raj B Shetty's Kannada production Su From So, which emerged as the big surprise hit in the industry this year, has reportedly crossed ₹100 crores at the global box office. According to Sacnilk, the Kannada film has grossed ₹78.57 crore at the Indian box office and ₹13 crores overseas, cumulatively grossing ₹104.44 crores.
The film's dream run is a bit of a breather for the Kannada film industry, which has been witnessing a dry spell this year. Directed by JP Thuminad, Su From So weaves an intricate story about the sudden possession of a man by a female spirit, examining misogyny, egotism and communal friendships with a brilliantly light touch.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, producer-actor Shetty opened up about the evolving landscape of Kannada cinema and the urgent need for homegrown films that the audience appreciates. “We need Kannada films that will pull people to the theatres,” he said, indicating that the industry hasn’t had the smoothest run this year.
He recalled the initial hesitation from distributors. “They told me clearly, don’t release it on the 25th, there are bigger films from other languages coming out. But I told them I’ll try. For me, the first week was a trial,” Shetty shared.
That trial quickly transformed into momentum. “The first day we had 70 shows in Bangalore. Second day? 180. By the third day, we hit 340 shows. On Sunday, they started opening 6 PM shows because they just couldn’t accommodate any more demand. Now Su From So is one of the biggest films in Bengaluru.”
The rural horror-comedy-drama raced ahead at the box-office from the word go, with its paid premieres in different cities drawing full houses. The film has exceeded even the team’s expectations — it earned about three times its budget within 10 days. The Malayalam version was released on August 1 and is doing well, and the Telugu version was released on August 8.
