In under 24 hours, the first single from actor Suriya’s upcoming action drama Karuppu has gone viral. The track, titled 'God Mode', has amassed more than six million views on YouTube. It signals Sai Abhayankar’s entry into the big league with a catchy introduction song for a top league superstar like Suriya. The film is being written and directed by RJ Balaji and the single also used clips from the full version of the song.

In the song, Suriya can be seen dancing in front of a deity dressed in black. Even the background dancers can be seen sporting black, ideal for a film titled Karuppu, meaning black. Karuppu is also said to be the actor’s name in the film. The dance steps and the songs beats have already been going viral on Instagram.

The teaser was launched on the Tamil actor's 50th birthday on July 23, promising a full-fledged action drama with a glimpse of the actor playing a lawyer again after Jai Bhim (2021). Titled Karuppu, which translates to black, the film also has a few callbacks to his classics in the 10-second teaser. One of these is the way he replicates the iconic watermelon sequence from his old film Ghajini. We also see him introducing himself as ‘Saravannan’, with the line ‘ennakku innoru per irukku’, translating to ‘I have another name too’, borrowed from the famous dialogue in Rajinikanth’s Baasha (1995). Not only is Suriya the actor’s stage name, but Saravannan is his real, given name. “A Feast By TEAM RJB” is how the teaser concludes.

Karuppu is being shot by GK Vishnu, who was the cinematographer behind films such as Jawan and Mersal. The film is written by Ashwin Ravichandran, Rahul Raj, T. S. Gopi Krishnan and Karan Aravind Kumar and produced by Dream Warrior Pictures. Apart from Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, the film has Swasika, Indrans, Yogi Babu, Sshivada, Natty Subramaniam and Supreeth Reddy.

Suriya was last seen in Karthik Subbaraj’s Retro, which had received positive to mixed reviews from critics and audience alike.
