The global music icon breathed his last surrounded by family and loved ones in San Francisco.
Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain passed away from complications arising out of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in San Francisco early Monday morning, a family representative confirmed. He was 73.
One of the world’s most transcendent musicians, Hussain was surrounded by family and loved ones at the UCSF Parnassus, where he breathed his last. He was admitted to the hospital last week.
He is survived by his wife Antonia Minnecola; his daughters Anisa Qureshi (her husband Taylor Phillips and their daughter Zara) and Isabella Qureshi; his brothers Taufiq Qureshi and Fazal Qureshi; and his sister Khurshid Aulia.
"He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy cherished by countless music lovers around the globe, with an influence that will resonate for generations to come. His prolific work as a teacher, mentor and educator has left an indelible mark on countless musicians. He hoped to inspire the next generation to go further. He leaves behind an unparalleled legacy as a cultural ambassador and one of the greatest musicians of all time. The family requests privacy at this time," a part of the statement read.
The son of legendary tabla master Ustad Alla Rakha, Hussain was hailed as one of the chief architects of the contemporary world music movement. Starting out as a child prodigy, he collaborated with several iconic performers, such as Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan and Shivkumar Sharma. His pathbreaking projects with Western musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma, Charles Lloyd, Béla Fleck, Edgar Meyer, Mickey Hart, George Harrison and John McLaughlin, brought Indian classical music to an international audience.
Hussain had also composed for a few selective film projects, such as the Indo-French psychological drama period film Vanaprastham, that starred Mohanlal and Suhasini Maniratnam.
In a career spanning over five decades, he became the first Indian to receive three Grammys in one night at the 66th Grammy Awards earlier this year. Hussain was also the recipient of many national honours, including the Padma Vibhushan (2023), Padma Bhushan (2002) and Padma Shri (1988).
