The trailer for Thalaivan Thalaivii, starring Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen, is out now and it promises a sharp, emotionally turbulent take on rural marriage. Directed by Pandiraj, the film is set to hit theatres on July 25, 2025.

Sethupathi plays Agasaveeran, a no-nonsense parotta master with a wry sense of humour. Nithya Menen stars opposite him as his spirited wife, a devoted homemaker with an appetite for food and plenty of confrontation. The trailer teases a relationship built on affection and irreverence, but also simmering with unresolved tension.

Set in a sun-drenched Tamil village, the visuals evoke rustic charm while the tone oscillates between playful and piercing. Domestic spats over cooking and pride escalate into deeper cracks, leading the couple to the brink of separation. Through biting humour and raw emotion, Thalaivan Thalaivii charts the slow unraveling of a love that once felt unbreakable.

Described by the makers as “a rugged love story,” the film marks another collaboration between Pandiraj and composer Santhosh Narayanan. The cinematography by M. Sukumar and art direction by K. Veerasamar contribute to a grounded, textured atmosphere, evoking the grit and intimacy of small-town life. Pradeep E Raghav is on the edit, while the film is produced by Sathya Jyothi Films, with Sendhil Thyagarajan and Arjun Thyagarajan serving as producers.

Sethupathi, who was last seen in Ace, appears to return to a more grounded space here, though it is not any less in its complexity. Menen, fresh from the success of Kadhalikka Neramillai, again takes on a character driven as much by feeling as by fire.

Earlier, at the press meet of the film, director Pandiraj spoke at length about an earlier misunderstanding between him and Sethupathi. He said there were some issues between them and that he had mentally decided to never work with the actor. The miscommunication only kept getting bigger and it was during a party at director Mysskin’s house that their issue was sorted out.

The film opens in cinemas July 25.
