“We’re glad that we were the first to be there to avail the opportunity,” Haasan said in a recent press meet.
Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life is all set to be released in the theatres on June 5. Moreover, the film will now be released on Netflix, only after an eight-week period at the theatres, rather than the usual four-week window. The move, which has come as a shot in the arm largely for the film and theatre owners, was announced by the makers at a recent press conference.
It’s not even an experiment but a pragmatic thing to do, said Kamal Haasan, the film's lead actor, co-writer, and co-producer. “I’m glad the OTT agreed. It was not a negotiation; it was a plan which maybe others could follow, and this could make the industry healthy. We’re glad that we were the first to be there to avail the opportunity.” The move could also help encourage its release in national multiplexes, especially in the northern markets.
Starring Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Abhirami, Joju George, Nasser, Mahesh Manjrekar and Ali Fazal, the film revolves around the exploits of Rangarayar Sakthivel (Kamal Haasan) and his prodigy Amar (Silambarasan TR), who eventually find themselves in a knotty face-off.
The film reunites Haasan with Ratnam over 35 years after their iconic Mumbai gangster drama Nayakan (1987). In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Haasan said that he and Mani Ratnam share the same wavelength, even if they don’t share the same vocabulary. “We both wrote the film together. When I say we wrote it together, it's not the noise of two pens scribbling together. I finished what I perceived would be a good film to make. I finished a script, and it was called 'Amar Hai', which is a pun. A man who is believed to be dead is not dead. His name is ‘Amar’, and that is the problem. I had etched it, and then Mani took it as an idea and went on to embellish it,” he told us.
