The makers of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's Thug Life will reportedly have to shell out ₹25 lakh as a fine for breaking the eight-week OTT window and opting for an earlier release on Netflix. The June 5 Tamil release, which was reportedly set to drop on Netflix after an eight-week run at the theatres, has now opted for an early drop following its poor performance at the box-office.
The film is reportedly heading for an OTT release scheduled four weeks after its release in the first week of June. According to a report by Pinkvilla, the film will draw these penalties from multiplex chains in North India for not abiding by the standard 8-week window. “There’s a norm in North India to strictly follow an 8-week window. As Thug Life time has breached the guidelines, the National Multiplex Chains have imposed a fine on the producers. It’s a nominal amount, where the producers and distributors of Thug Life have to forgo their theatrical share from Hindi. Incidentally, the amount comes to Rs 25 lakh,” a source told the publication.
The Mani Ratnam action drama, which co-starred Haasan, Silambarasan TR, Trisha, and Ashok Selvan, was released across the country, barring Karnataka, to mixed reviews. Pro-Kannada groups and the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce banned the film in the state following Haasan's comment about the Kannada language being born out of Tamil. The actor refused to apologise for his comment, and in a recent development, the Supreme Court directed the state to release the film, coming down firmly in favour of artistic freedom. However, distributors in the state were wary of incurring losses for releasing a film with middling word-of-mouth and low box-office returns.
Thug Life, which had music by AR Rahman and cinematography by Ravi K Chandran, marked the reunion of Ratnam and Haasan after their iconic outing in Nayakan (1987).
