The trailer of Dhanush’s upcoming film Kara was launched at a grand event in Chennai on Sunday. The 82-second trailer introduces us to the murky world of the film, which begins with the newsreel coverage of Iran bombing oil fields in Kuwait, which took place in the early 1990s. As the story shifts to South Tamil Nadu, we see a cop played by Suraj Venjaramoodu investigating the heist of what appears to be a bank. Karasamy, the character played by Dhanush, is said to be the one behind the loot, and the police officer expects the same criminal to be planning another bank heist as we enter into the world of the film.
As explained by the film’s director in interviews, Dhanush is said to be playing a morally ambiguous character in the film. With the film showing the backdrop of remittances from West Asia drying up and with a shot of a character setting fire to his cotton crops, the film seems to begin at a time of intense financial difficulty. Kara’s plan to start robbing banks may have been a result of his financial burden. In a scene, Kara can be seen explaining how his only skill set is to break through roofs to start stealing. The character played by Mamitha Baiju can also be seen shouting at Kara for his devious ways. The film will perhaps explore a redemption arc for his character while also going into the depths of how he got here.
The film is being directed by Por Thozhil director Vignesh Raja. It is also co-written by Alfred Prakash, who had also written Por Thozhil. The cinematography is by Theni Eswar, and the film’s music is being scored by GV Prakash Kumar. Vels Films International is producing the film, and it will be released on April 30.
