From SS Rajamouli to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several admirers condoled the loss of the inimitable actor.
Legendary Telugu film actor Kota Srinivasa Rao passed away due to age-related ailments on Sunday (July 13). The actor, 83, passed away at his residence in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad. The actor, who has starred in 750 films across languages, has been a seminal part of the Telugu film industry landscape ever since he made his debut in K Vasu’s Telugu film Pranam Khareedu (1978), which also co-starred Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi. The actor also served as a BJP MLA from the Vijayawada East assembly constituency in Andhra Pradesh between 1999 and 2004.
Rao, who has won nine state Nandi Awards for his characteristic supporting and villain roles, was awarded the Padma Shri for his contribution to Indian cinema in 2015. His notable roles in Telugu include Sekhar Kammula’s Leader (2010), Bhaskar’s Bommarillu (2006), Trivikram Srinivas’s S/O Satyamurthy (2015), Puri Jagannadh’s Idiot (2002), among others. The actor, who was an incredibly popular presence in Tamil cinema with films such as Thirupaachi (2005) and Ko (2011), made his debut with Vikram’s action film Saamy in 2003.
Several celebrities condoled the actor’s passing, reminiscing about Rao’s work ethic. “Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Kota Srinivasa Rao garu. A master of his craft, a legend who breathed life into every character he portrayed. His presence on screen was truly irreplaceable. My heartfelt condolences to his family. Om Shanti,” wrote Telugu filmmaker SS Rajamouli.
Allu Arjun, who has worked with the actor in films such as S/O Satyamurthy, wrote, “Just woke up to the heartbreaking news about Kota garu . An irreplaceable versatile actor . We will miss you Kota garu . Condolences to the family , friends & admirers. May his soul rest in peace.”
Pawan Kalyan, too, wrote of his friendship with the actor. According to The Hindu, he appreciated Rao’s command of the Telugu language and dialects, along with his ability to play diverse roles as a villain and character-heavy parts. He also recalled how he played an important role in his [Kalyan’s] first film Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi (1996).
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote of Rao’s philanthropy. “He enthralled audiences across generations with his riveting performances. He was also at the forefront of social service and worked towards empowering the poor and downtrodden. Condolences to his family and countless admirers. Om Shanti,” Modi wrote on X.
Several celebrities, including Chiranjeevi, Pawan Kalyan, Prakash Raj, Venkatesh Daggubati, Rana Daggubati, Jr NTR and SS Rajamouli, attended the actor’s funeral at his home on Sunday. The actor’s last film is said to be Pawan Kalyan’s upcoming film Hari Hara Veera Mallu.
