Historians have long told the story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, one that resulted in his brutal death at the hands of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Many note that he was tortured for weeks before he passed. In an interview withThe Hollywood Reporter India, actor Vicky Kaushal reflected on the filming of that scene, playing the role of the valiant Chhatrapati in his upcoming film Chhaava (2025).

“Whoever knows the story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj would know how it ends…” stated the actor, on the story that is hundreds of years old.

Kaushal added, “But it’s about the ‘how’ part of it.”

He continued, “When we were shooting those portions, it was a different energy… I still can’t fathom how a human being can go through all that and not give up what he stands for.”

“I guess that’s why this story needs to be told 350 years later… remembered and celebrated for the next 350 years also. Be it through this film, a book, a song or any art form,” he said.

Shooting that section of the film and bringing out such deep-seated emotions felt like being in a trace to the actor, who completed 10 years in the industry in 2025. He revealed, “I’m happy we shot it all together when that chunk came. As an actor, that was something completely new to me.”

Anupama Chopra recalled that Kaushal had surprised audiences with a similarly emotionally-charged climax in Sardar Udham (2021). “Those 40 minutes are just shattering. You’ve taken us to things that are very grim and tough to watch,” she said.

He smiled as he added, “Praying this one takes you there, and even further.”
