The 'Tauba Tauba' actor reflects on staying grounded and pushing boundaries constantly
Vicky Kaushal has had an enjoyable year, with his hit track ‘Tauba Tauba’ becoming a cultural sensation. Originally released as part of Bad Newz’s soundtrack, the song broke the Internet again recently when music icon Asha Bhonsle performed it during her Dubai concert.
Kaushal, who appeared on The Hollywood Reporter India's exclusive roundtable, shared insights into his craft, including his greatest fear: complacency in acting.
“More than love, I think the tricky space is complacency,” Kaushal explained. “It seeps in without you even knowing it. One fine day, you get a jhatka, a jolt in a moment that rattles you, and it makes you realise you’ve been on autopilot.”
He elaborated on the creative process, describing how actors sometimes fall into a routine, where their craft becomes muscle memory. “When you’re shooting, you commit to a character in the early days, and it’s fresh. In the middle, it can become second nature. You’re in a flow, and I love being in that space because it feels like you finally have a grip over your character. But then comes a small moment — a scene, even just one line — that makes you think, ‘Easy le raha hu kya main?’ (Am I taking this lightly?) It works as a reminder to keep exploring your character. That there’s more to discover in the character and the story.”
Kaushal’s dedication to staying sharp and challenging himself aligns with his recent achievements. As he forges ahead in his stellar career, his focus on avoiding complacency serves as a reminder that the pursuit of excellence is a continuous process.
He will next be seen in Laxman Utekar's historical action film Chhaava, based on the life of Maratha king Sambhaji, alongside Rashmika Mandanna.
