Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi has responded to allegations of sexual exploitation that surfaced on social media earlier this week, calling them “filthy” and “completely false.” In an interview with Deccan Chronicle on Wednesday (30 July), the actor denied any wrongdoing and confirmed that he has filed a cybercrime complaint against the individual who made the claims on X (formerly Twitter).

The accusations were first made by a user identified as @Ramya_mohan, who alleged that Sethupathi had exploited a young woman in exchange for “caravan favours.” The tweets, which sparked a wave of speculation online, were deleted within hours of being posted. The account itself has since been deactivated.

“Anyone who knows me even remotely will laugh at this. I know myself too,” Sethupathi told Deccan Chronicle. “This kind of filthy accusation can’t upset me. My family and close friends are upset, but I tell them, ‘Let it slide. This woman is obviously doing it to be noticed. She has her few minutes of fame, let her enjoy it.’”

Sethupathi described the incident as part of a “whispering campaign” that he says has followed him for the past seven years. “I’ve faced all kinds of whispering campaigns… Such targeting has not affected me so far. It never will,” he said, adding that he cannot allow smear campaigns to derail his work or personal peace.

The actor also questioned the timing of the allegations, suggesting they may have been aimed at undermining the success of his new film Thalaivan Thalaivii, which is currently performing well at the box-office. “Probably, some jealous elements think that by tarnishing me, they can damage my film. It doesn’t work that way,” he said. “In today’s day and age, anyone can say anything about anybody. There are no filters. All you need is an account on social media, and you can write what you like without fear of repercussion.”

The original posts made a number of unverified claims about Sethupathi’s involvement in what the user described as a “drug sex-nexus” within the Tamil film industry. One tweet alleged that the victim’s family discovered evidence through her diary and phone messages. These claims have not been corroborated, and no formal complaint has been filed against the actor aside from his own cybercrime case.

As of now, no official statement has been released by law enforcement authorities. Sethupathi remains active in promotional appearances for Thalaivan Thalaivii and has not indicated any plans to pause public engagements.
