Wamiqa Gabbi has been cast opposite Rajkummar Rao in the upcoming biopic of public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, with filming due to begin in October 2025. The project, directed by Avinash Arun and produced by Dinesh Vijan, will retrace some of the most defining and contentious criminal trials in recent Indian history.

Rao, who has built a reputation for inhabiting complex real-life characters, will step into the shoes of Nikam, best known for leading the prosecutions in the 1993 Bombay bombings and the 2008 Mumbai train attacks. Gabbi, who recently drew praise for her performances in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Khufiya and the series Jubilee, has signed on as the female lead.

According to industry sources, the actors will undertake a month-long preparation process before filming begins. “Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi are expected to participate in several acting workshops through September to build their characters and chemistry on screen,” a source close to the production told Pinkvilla. Both performers are also expected to undergo significant changes in appearance to match the real-life context of the story.

The film marks the sixth collaboration between Rao and producer Vijan, following titles such as Stree, Made in China and the upcoming Stree 2. For Gabbi, it reunites her with Rao after the comedy Bhool Chuk Maaf, with producers keen to build on the rapport the two actors displayed.

Vijan, who is preparing for the release of Param Sundari this week, has an expansive slate that includes Thama, Cocktail 2 and Ikkis. Rao meanwhile remains one of the busiest actors in Hindi cinema, balancing thrillers, comedies and a forthcoming project centred on Bhagat Singh. Gabbi too has a packed schedule, including Pati Patni Aur Woh Do with Shahid Kapoor and the horror-comedy Bhooth Bangla with Akshay Kumar, Tabu and Priyadarshan.

The Ujjwal Nikam biopic is expected to shine a light on the workings of India’s legal system, while revisiting trials that shaped the nation’s collective memory.
