Who is Mohini Dey?
The acclaimed bassist is based in Mumbai, and has worked with the likes of A.R. Rahman, Zakir Hussain and Willow Smith.
Mohini Dey is an Indian bass player from Kolkata, who has worked with several talented musicians across the globe. A renowned bass guitarist, arranger, producer and vocalist, she has collaborated with names such as Willow Smith, AR Rahman, Zakir Hussain, Quincy Jones, Jordan Rudess, Sivamani, Salim Sulaiman, Clinton Cerejo, Neeti Mohan, Amit Trivedi, Benny Dayal, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shreya Ghoshal, Arijit Singh and Vishal-Shekar.
Dey has also performed on international shows like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Tiny Desk Concerts by NPR with Willow Smith; worked for companies like Bacardi, Jockey, Levi's, MTV channel; played at festivals like the Timisoara Jazz Festival 2022, Enter Enea Jazz Festival 2022, Goa's International Jazz Festival 2015, Delhi's International Jazz Festival 2013, South Asian Music Festival 2013 and International Jazz Day (Mumbai), Kalaghoda Fest 2016.
With over 500,000 followers on Instagram, she ranks within the ‘Top 10 Bassists in the 21st Century’ on Music Radar, and her eponymous debut album is a unique amalgamation of rock, jazz, RnB and funk, alongside Indian Carnatic rhythms and konnakol vocals.
The musician was in the news recently, after she announced her divorce from saxophonist Mark Hartsuch. They played together in the band MaMoGi, along with drummer Gino Banks. Dey and Hartsuch took to Instagram and shared a joint note that read: "With a heavy heart, Mark and I announce that we have separated. First, as a commitment to our friends and family, this is a mutual understanding between us. While we remain great friends, we both have decided that we want different things in life and separation through mutual agreement was the best way to proceed."
