ZEE5’s Hindi Original series Janaawar – The Beast Within is a rare crime thriller that dares to go beyond the surface. Produced by Aarambh Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. and directed by Shachindra Vats, the series brings together realism, folklore, and suspense in a way rarely seen on Indian screens.
Headlined by Bhuvan Arora, the show is powered by an ensemble cast including Bhagwan Tiwari, Atul Kale, Vaibhav Yashvir, Eshika Dey, Vinod Suryavanshi, Amit Sharma, Badrul Islam, and Deekshha Sonalkar Tham.
Set in the town of Chhand, Janaawar follows Hemant Kumar (Bhuvan Arora), a cop whose pursuit of justice pushes him into the heart of darkness. A headless corpse, stolen gold, and a missing man shake the town’s fragile balance, but what begins as a crime investigation soon unearths deeper truths — of systemic prejudice, of haunting folklore, and of the beast every man carries within. The presence of the Gram Devta lingers as both shadow and reminder: true identity is born of courage, not circumstance.
For director Shachindra Vats, the tone of the series comes directly from its setting. “The land of Chhattisgarh itself shaped the show,” he shares. “When you live among dense forests, tribal customs, caste equations, and local deities, reality and mysticism are never separate — they exist side by side. Janaawar captures that truth. The investigation is grounded in realism, but the village folklore and rituals bring out the sinister mystical layer.”
That grounding in lived experience, he adds, is what gave the series its texture. “The biggest spark came from observing real people, caste hierarchies, and forgotten rituals in rural Chhattisgarh. Janaawar has the intensity of a thriller, but its identity is deeply rooted in the north Indian heartland rather than mimicking international formats.”
And at its core, Vats believes the series offers more than just suspense. “What sets Janaawar apart is that it isn’t just a thriller, it’s a mirror of society. It dares to question caste, justice, and power, while weaving in folklore. That blend of realism and mythology makes it different.”
Raw, unflinching, and deeply human — Janaawar – The Beast Within is not just a thriller, but an experience. It is streaming on ZEE5 from September 26.
