AR Rahman talks about his reunion with Prabhudeva in their upcoming film 'Moonwalk'.
After a globally acclaimed career of over three decades, composer AR Rahman is ready to shift gears and try his hand at acting. Rahman will be seen sharing the screen with Prabhudeva in the upcoming film Moonwalk.
During a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, where he was joined by the cast of the silent film Gandhi Talks, Rahman reflected on his experience of working on the film, which he has also composed for.
“Working with Prabhudeva was amazing. He is such a genius, he has electrified my songs… It is a tribute to all the people who have loved both of us (together)." Their collaborative history, spanning classics like 'Mukkala Mukkabla' and 'Urvasi Urvasi', defined a lot of the 90s soundtracks in Tamil cinema.
With Prabhudeva’s distinct choreography, set to Rahman’s iconic soundscapes, the audience saw a decade of on-screen magic like no other. Rahman said Prabhudeva has a way of “interpreting music beautifully," so it was no surprise that a big motivator for the composer to take on this unusual role was that he would be working alongside him on a musical film.
In Moonwalk, Rahman plays a character that feels both playful and experimental. He portrays a fictional, "angry young film director" — ironically also named AR Rahman — adding a meta-fictional layer to this musical comedy.
What began as a brief appearance in the song 'Mayile' evolved into an extended acting role after the director, Manoj Nirmala Sreedharan, noticed Rahman’s natural charisma on set.
Although he has been on camera since 1997, this is perhaps his first foray into playing a character. It felt quite natural, he says, as he drew on his own experiences working on creative projects.
“I’m used to that character,” he chuckles, “I can be a control freak sometimes.” Rahman has proved himself to be quite the polymath, devoting himself to multiple unique, complex projects at once.
Rahman has scored the upcoming silent film, Gandhi Talks, starring Vijay Sethupathi, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Siddarth Jadhav, which is set to release on January 30, 2026. Meanwhile, Moonwalk, also starring Yogi Babu and Redin Kingsley, is expected to release in May 2026.
