It’s been just over a year since the release of the life-altering blockbuster Premalu, and Sangeeth Prathap—better known as the much-loved Amal Davis from the 2024 rom-com— already has multiple reasons to celebrate. He recently won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Editor for his work on the 2023 romance Little Miss Rawther, and is simultaneously basking in the success of Thudarum, in which he plays a pivotal role.
“Until this phase, my thought process was stuck in the idea that my struggles were never-ending,” he says. “But these last two years have been very good to me. Still, because of those struggles, I’m aware that even this good phase is not solely the result of my own effort, talent, or planning. Just like this phase, I know there’s a pattern—that things may go sour from here, and then they’ll improve again. It’s a cycle.”
In 2025, nearly 90 per cent of his time is being devoted to acting. Editing, unlike in previous years, has taken a backseat. When asked if he knows of any other editor-turned-actor, he says he hasn’t come across one yet. Such is the rare combination of skills that has brought him here.
“But it’s also because of the Hridayam team, who noticed my antics and temperament while I was working as the film’s on-location editor,” he explains. “They were very specifically looking for someone with my body type to play a college senior who is also one of the antagonists. That movie gave a lot of space for newcomers. I didn’t feel nervous.”
In this year’s hit comedy Bromance, now streaming on SonyLIV, he plays a hacker whose role spans the film’s entire duration. “At first, I wasn’t too keen to play a hacker because there’s a very stereotypical way they are usually portrayed,” he says. “They’re often shown as foolish, stumbling upon impressive results by accident. But my character in Bromance, Hariharasudhan, is actually skilled at hacking. The comedy arises from his life choices, not from his incompetence. That’s what attracted me to it.”
He was most recently seen in Thudarum, playing a character who shifts the mood and direction of the film. Reflecting on the jubilation shared by the cast and crew, he says, “Of course we’re all delighted with what the film has achieved. But what I’ve noticed about legends like Lalettan [Mohanlal] is how they rise above the emotional highs of a movie’s success. They’ve seen it all before—and will see it all again. It’s another kind of mindset.”
Prathap will next be seen in Hridayapoorvam, a film by Sathyan Anthikad starring Mohanlal.
