Netflix had a short-lived crash on Thursday morning after Stranger Things 5 — the final chapter of the streamer’s biggest global phenomenon — dropped worldwide. Within minutes of the release, fans logging in to watch the Hawkins crew’s last stand overwhelmed the platform, triggering a wave of outages across multiple countries.

The service was down for nearly an hour for many users in the US, with Downdetector logging over 8,000 complaints. Reports of frozen screens, stalled episode loads and mid-play crashes rolled in from India as well, where Netflix confirmed a brief early-morning disruption.

The frenzy wasn’t entirely unexpected — co-creator Ross Duffer had said earlier that Netflix had ramped up bandwidth by 30 percent in anticipation — but clearly, the Upside Down energy proved harder to contain than planned.

The streamer also broke its usual pattern by skipping the standard 12:30 pm IST launch slot. Instead, Stranger Things 5 dropped at 6:30 am IST (coinciding with US prime time), triggering a tidal wave of global logins as fans raced to avoid spoilers. Given that Season 4 shattered Netflix records with over a billion viewing hours, the rush for the series' final season was always going to be a high-pressure stress test.

Netflix acknowledged the issue in an emailed response to Reuters, confirming that “some members briefly experienced an issue streaming on TV devices, but service recovered for all accounts within five minutes.”

With the final season promising an end to the fight against Vecna, long-awaited character arcs, and the kind of emotional devastation the Duffers have practically trademarked, fans clearly weren’t willing to wait even a few minutes. And if the early-morning crash is any indication, the show’s farewell tour is already shaping up to be one of the biggest streaming events of the year.
