Kairam Vaashi reviews 418, directed by debutant Kirtan Nadagouda, produced by Mythri Movie Makers and presented by Prashanth Neel. Set in a medical college’s boys’ hostel in coastal Karnataka, the horror film follows first-year students Vivek and Rohith, whose room sits next to the sealed, supposedly haunted Room 418. Women are forbidden from entering the hostel, but Rohith’s girlfriend is determined to defy the rule and unlock the room.

Kairam praises the film’s technical craft, from Anupam C’s sound design and Vishnu Sujathan’s sound mixing to Dinesh Divakaran’s claustrophobic framing and eerie lighting. He also singles out Chaithra J. Achar’s brilliant performance as Devika, a Yakshagana artist. But while the jump scares land, the writing leaves its ideas about obsession, hallucinations and clinical investigation feeling rushed and incomplete. Thinly developed characters, convenient plotting and forced reveals keep the audience at an emotional distance. For Kairam, the disturbing potential of consuming obsession proves more compelling than the formulaic jolts.

The THR Bottomline: 418 is a watchable template horror film that displays far more promise in its technical craft than in its writing.
