Kairam Vaashi reviews Ranabaali, the Telugu period action drama directed by Rahul Sankrityan, written by Pramod Tammineni and starring Vijay Deverakonda, Rashmika Mandanna and Arnold Vosloo. Set against the Great Madras Famine of the late 1870s, the film follows Singanamala Bobbili Ranabaali, a local legend who takes on the British to protect his people. Kairam finds the film most powerful as a chronicle of colonial greed and human suffering, praising its harrowing depiction of starvation, its Burra Katha framing and the cinematography and art direction that bring the region’s sun-bleached landscape to life.

But the dramatic framework, Kairam argues, struggles to rise above familiar genre conventions. The attempt to cover Ranabaali’s entire life leaves the narrative stretched thin, while the hero, villain and supporting characters rarely escape their archetypes. Even Vijay’s performance feels constrained by the template. A crackling rebel raid, a superbly staged cave sequence and Ajay-Atul’s music offer flashes of inspiration, particularly the soul-stirring Kaaru Nisale. Yet Kairam wishes the film had trusted its quieter, deeply felt emotional moments more than its predictable beats and melodramatic flourishes.

The THR Bottomline: Ranabaali possesses sparks of brilliance and is by no means a bad film. But hampered by predictable storytelling templates, it stops short of becoming a memorable one.
