Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday storms the box office with $10.5 million in pre-sales within 12 hours, despite fewer than 10 percent of showtimes being available. The film shattered first-day benchmarks for other upcoming Marvel titles, signaling extraordinary pent-up demand driven by the Russo Brothers’ return, Robert Downey Jr.’s shocking turn as Victor Von Doom, and Disney’s Infinity Vision strategy.
After months of anticipation and speculation, Marvel studios dropped an epic trailer that gives fans their first look into the next chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday has already kicked off its box office run with a record-breaking $10.5 million in pre-sales within just 12 hours.
The film was able to achieve this even amidst severe capacity constraints: less than 10 percent of total theatrical showtimes were actually open for sale. This indicates an incredible level of pent-up demand that is currently outpacing even the most optimistic industry projections.
Avengers: Doomsday needed no more than two hours to blow past the full first day pre-sale numbers of other upcoming Marvel titles, including Captain American: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps combined.
The surge in sales underlines the audience's excitement for not only the return of the beloved franchise, but also of the Russo Brothers (Anthony and John Russo) stepping into their roles and the shocking casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom which seems to have reignited the thrill for the movie.
A significant driver behind this early success is Disney's strategy behind its newly trademarked Infinity Vision format. Early bookings were strategically restricted to these theaters in order to claim premium real estate and secure audiences ahead of Warner Bros' Dune: Part III, which is currently slated for the same release date (December 18) as Avengers: Doomsday.
The film sees Steve Rogers alongside Thor. At the same time, fan-favourite X-Men characters also join the battle, including Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto and James Marsden as Cyclops. The Fantastic Four are also set to play a pivotal role.
