The trailer for Rajkumar Santoshi’s Batwara 1947 introduces Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta as a couple celebrating India’s independence before their lives are upended by Partition violence. Deol fights to escort his family to Pakistan, where they encounter Shabana Azmi in a former Hindu haveli. Produced by Aamir Khan, the film adapts Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play on the human cost of 1947.
The makers of Rajkumar Santoshi's Batwara 1947 have finally dropped its trailer. A glimpse into partition-era India, the film marks Santoshi's first collaboration with Sunny Deol since Ghatak in 1996.
Headlined by Deol, the film also stars Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, and Abhimanyu Singh. Zinta will be making her return Hindi cinema after her last project, Bhaiaji Superhit! (2018) where she co-starred with Deol.
The almost three-minute trailer opens with a shot of Deol and Zinta, who play husband and wife, in a celebratory exchange as they congratulate each other on India's independence. Then, the trailer almost immediately takes a heavier shift with visuals of unrest, chaos and unsettling violence.
Deol is seen brawling his way through chaos to get his family safely across the border. Once in Pakistan, he is directed a large haveli, that once belonged to a Hindu family, and finds Azmi still living there, seemingly the matriarch of that household. From this point on, Deol takes makes it his mission to protect Azmi as tensions around their home escalate.
Produced by Aamir Khan under Aamir Khan Productions, Batwara 1947 is based on playwright Asghar Wajahat's Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai, a play set against the backdrop of the Partition of India in 1947.
Deol was most recently seen in Siddharth P Malhotra's Ikka, and is next set to appear in Gabru, and Ramayana: Part 1. Azmi was last seen in the Netflix series Dabba Cartel and in Faraz Arif Ansari's Bun Tikki, while Fazal most recently appeared in the 2026 crime series Raakh.
