25 Years of 'Gadar': Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel Reunite; Anil Sharma Reveals Update on 'Gadar 3'

Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel, and director Anil Sharma gathered in Mumbai on Monday evening to celebrate 25 years of Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, the 2001 Hindi film that remains one of the highest-footfall releases in the history of Indian cinema.

Others in attendance included actor Utkarsh Sharma, who appeared in the original film as a child artist and returned to the franchise in Gadar 2 (2023); singer Udit Narayan, whose vocals featured prominently in the film's soundtrack; director Madhur Bhandarkar; and actor Mushtaq Khan, who was part of the original cast. A cake-cutting ceremony took place at the event.

Released on June 15, 2001, the film was directed by Anil Sharma and produced by Nittin Keni under the Zee Telefilms banner. Written by Shaktimaan Talwar, with music composed by Uttam Singh and lyrics by Anand Bakshi, it was shot by cinematographer Najeeb Khan. The 2001 hit film starred Sunny Deol as Tara Singh, a Sikh truck driver, and Ameesha Patel played Sakina Ali, a Muslim woman from an aristocratic family, in a story set during the 1947 Partition of India.

The film’s sequel, Gadar 2, directed by Anil Sharma with Deol, Patel, and Utkarsh Sharma reprising their roles, released on August 11, 2023.

At the event, Sharma confirmed that a third film in the franchise is in development. Speaking about the possibility of Gadar 3, he said: "The first part was a bomb, the second part was an atom bomb, the third part will be a nuclear bomb. The day I get that nuclear bomb ready, I'll ask them to detonate it." Sharma indicated that filming could begin in 2027 as the script is currently under development.

Deol was last seen in Border 2, the sequel to his acclaimed 1997 war drama, Border. Among his confirmed upcoming projects is Batwara 1947, a period drama directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan Productions, which is slated to release this Independence Day after prior delays.
