Mirzapur: The Movie, releasing in theatres on September 4, is a standalone prequel set in 2018 between episodes 6 and 7 of Season 1. Viewers only need to watch episodes 1–6, if at all, as the film is designed for both new and existing fans. It deep dives into violent father–son dynamics in Purvanchal and revives characters later killed in the series.
The release of Mirzapur: The Movie is right around the corner, and there's plenty of good news that comes with it.
Up till now, the makers of the Mirzapur have released three seasons, with an upcoming theatrical film Mirzapur: The Movie arriving on September 4. The film will take us back to "unexplored" narrative set in 2018, the year the first season was released.
Mirzapur: The Movie is set right in the middle of episode 6 and episode 7 of Season 1. This also means that the audience will see some of the characters who are killed later on in the show reprising their parts on screen. These prominent characters include Munna Tripathi (Divvyendu) and Golu Gupta (Shweta Tripathi)
While the casting has largely remained the same, the only switch in this movie is Vikrant Massey as Bablu Pandit being replaced by Jitendra Kumar. The prequel will explore an untold, standalone chapter within the 2018 timeline and will dive deeper into the explosive, violent and grim relationship between the fathers and sons of Purvanchal (the region that the city of Mirzapur is located in). The plot centres around a power struggle to gain the reins of Mirzapur.
In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, actor Pankaj Tripathi, who leads the series as Kaleen Bhaiya — the 'king' of the Mirzapur mafia — revealed that the audience doesn't have to have watched the series to enjoy the film. "You don't need to be familiar with Mirzapur at all to enjoy the film. We have shot it from the point of view of community viewing, as opposed to personal viewing on TV and mobile devices." A new location, Rajasthan, will place a crucial role in the film while expanding its visual flavour. Actor-politician Ravi Kishan will play central role in the new narrative, as revealed in the trailer.
During the film's promotional event in Patna, Bihar, Ali Fazal, who has reclaimed his role across three seasons and will return in the film as Guddu Pandit, reiterated the point, explaining that "Everyone must go home and watch Series 1, but only till episode 6. From episode 6 the story of the movie starts and revolves."
The actor also clarified that the film is a different story in itself and will explore the world within Purvanchal rather than stand as a direct continuation of the series.
Titled 'Barfi,' episode 6 marked a notable shift in the journeys of brothers Guddu (Fazal) and Bablu (Massey), who are entrusted with the responsibility of expanding the opium-smuggling network of Kaleen Bhaiya. After gaining a competitive advantage in the illegal arms business and proving their worth to Kaleen Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi), Guddu and Bablu are on their way to be crowned the 'lions' of Mirzapur. The episode also covers Munna Tripathi's (Divvyendu) eruptive relationship with power.
Episode 6 also introduces Amit Sial as SSP Ram Sharan Maurya. He, unlike the rest of the police officers working in favour of the local mafia, is committed to confront crime, posing a major threat to Tripathi's empire. In this episode, we also see advancements in Guddu and Swwety's (Shriya Pilgaonkar) relationship as she introduces him to her father, Parshuram Gupta — a corrupt police officer with close ties to Kaleen Bhaiya.
Directed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna, the film reunites the regulars Tripathi, Divyendu, Fazal and Rasika Dugal. Along with them, the film also stars Jitendra Kumar, Ravi Kishan and Abhishek Banerjee as new entrants to the madness. Mohitt Maalik, Sheeba Chadha, Rajesh Tailang, Pramod Pathak, Pilgaonkar, Harshita Shekhar Gaur, Shweta Tripathi, Sonal S. Chauhan, Anangsha Biswas, Shaji Chaudhary, Satendra Soni, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Sushant Singh round out the cast.
Mirzapur: The Movie is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under Excel Entertainment, with Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani serving as co-producers.
