After a thunderous run in India and select overseas markets, Aditya Dhar's Dhurandhar is set to release in Japan on July 10. The first instalment of the two-part spy saga starring Ranveer Singh will reach Japanese theatres, a growing market for blockbuster films from India.

Dhurandhar (Part 1) recorded a landmark box-office performance internationally, emerging as the No. 1 Hindi film of all time in North America, while also becoming the highest-grossing Indian film ever in Canada and Australia, and ranking among the top-performing Indian films in the UK. However, the film was not released in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations following a uniform ban.

Dhurandhar stars Ranveer Singh as an undercover Indian spy in Pakistan, infiltrating the Karachi underworld to dismantle the nation's terror infrastructure. The first instalment, released in December, 2025, became a mammoth hit, setting multiple box-office records and becoming the second-highest-grossing Hindi film of all time. The Aditya Dhar-directed film was praised for its slick action, striking soundtrack choices, and the performances of Singh, Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, R Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt and Rakesh Bedi.

The second installment, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, was released in March, 2026 and was an even bigger success.

In recent years, several Indian films have found distribution and popularity in Japan, across both Hindi and regional-language industries. Both RRR two-part compilation of SS Rajamouli's Baahubali released there in 2022 and 2025 resepctively. Pushpa 2: The Rule, a hit crime saga starring Allu Arjun, and Animal, a violent action drama with Ranbir Kapoor, both released in Japan in early 2026.

Dhanush’s bilingual film Kuberaa also reached select Japanese theatres this month, while Prabhas-starrer. The Raja Saab was announced to have a Japanese release earlier this year. In addition to tentpoles, several big and small Indian films, including older releases, have been screened in Tokyo through limited theatrical runs and curated initiatives.
