The film was released in the country on May 3, marking its third year anniversary
Even as Kamal Haasan's Thug Life faces its opening day box-office results in India, the actor's three-year-old film is scoring big miles away in Japan. Lokesh Kanagaraj's directorial Vikram (2022) got a release in Japan on May 30, coinciding with the film's third year anniversary, and according to reports, it has set a new opening day record in the country.
Released across 54 screens in Japan, the Kamal-Lokesh film is setting a new record for the biggest-ever opening for a non-Japanese film in Japan, grossing over ₹50 lakh in three days, The Hindu reported. The film was distributed in Japan by leading Indian film distributor, Twin Co. Ltd., which has brought other titles such as Baahubali (2015), RRR (2022), Devara (2024), and Jawan (2023) to Japanese screens.
The action film, which marked the first collaboration between Haasan and Kanagaraj, told the story of Vikram, a former commander of a black ops squad, who faces off against a drug syndicate in Chennai. The film co-starred Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, Gayathrie Shankar, Kalidas Jayaram, and Narain in important roles, and was produced by Haasan's Raaj Kamal Films International. The action blockbuster had camerawork by Girish Gangadharan and music by Anirudh Ravichander.
Kanagaraj will next be directing Rajinikanth in Coolie, which is headed for an August release. The filmmaker will also be collaborating with Aamir Khan on a large-scale superhero action film, which is set to go into production in the latter half of 2026.
Speaking to a select group of journalists in Mumbai ahead of the release of Sitare Zameen Par, Khan opened up about his future slate. “Lokesh (Kanagaraj) and I are doing a film together. It’s a superhero film, a big-scale action outing. The film will begin in the second half of 2026. We have both signed it. I cannot reveal anything further,” he said.
