Late on Sunday, Dream Warrior Pictures, the producers of Suriya’s upcoming movie, launched a nearly three-minute-long trailer introducing us to the world of Karuppu. In it, we see the film’s title taking the dual meaning: one being both the name of a deity (Karuppu), and the other being the colour black that lawyers wear in court. It also appears that both Trisha and RJ Balaji will be playing the role of lawyers in the film. Natty is seen to be playing the role of a judge in this courtroom, a possible antagonist to Suriya’s saviour.
What begins like the opening moments of a serious drama about a social issue quickly shifts gears to take the form of a hardcore mass action movie as we see Suriya speaking directly to his fans, the judge of the courtroom setting the stage for a big star intro and several punch dialogues that suggest an inevitable shift towards action. The film’s score, by Sai Abhyankkar, further underlines the massy undertone of the film, adding to the mystery around Suriya’s character. By combining the powers of a deity with a regular Joe, the film could also play out like the origin story of a folktale-like superhero.
It is being shot by GK Vishnu, who was the cinematographer behind films such as Jawan and Mersal. Karuppu is written by Ashwin Ravichandran, Rahul Raj, T. S. Gopi Krishnan and Karan Aravind Kumar and produced by Dream Warrior Pictures. Apart from Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, the film features actors Swasika, Indrans, Yogi Babu, Sshivada, Natty Subramaniam and Supreeth Reddy. SR Prabhu is the film’s producer, and the film will release this Thursday, the 14th of May, after several postponements and delays in theatrical release.
Suriya was last seen in Retro, while Trisha was featured in Thug Life.
