Actor Emraan Hashmi makes his return to the horror genre with Rooh, a musical-horror film slated for a theatrical release in 2027. Directed by Mayank Sharma, the film is described as a large-scale theatrical project combining horror, music and emotion. Sharma, best known for creating and directing the Breathe franchise, on Prime Video, has co-written the film alongside Vishal Kapoor, whose credits include Lapachhapi and Chhorii.
The makers made the announcement with an unsettling motion poster. According to Hashmi, Rooh appealed to him because of its blend of horror, emotion and music. The actor has powered notable horror titles like Raaz: The Mystery Continues and Ek Thi Daayan in the past.
“ROOH is a film that immediately connected with me because it brings together new-age horror, emotion and music in a very powerful way," Hashmi said in a statement. "This is a space that audiences have always associated with me, and the world Mayank is creating feels intense, emotional and cinematic. That is what excited me the most about ROOH, and I am really looking forward to audiences experiencing it on the big screen.”
Rooh is being produced by Vikram Khakhar and Sunny Khanna under the banner of Vicked Films Productions. Industry sources indicate that the project is being developed in collaboration with an international crew, with an emphasis on scale and visual finesse.
Speaking about the film, director Mayank Sharma said, “As someone who has always loved the horror genre…ROOH is my attempt to create a film that goes beyond fear. It’s emotionally layered and immersed with unsettling atmosphere and presented with contemporary cinematic treatment… I’m thrilled to collaborate with Emraan for this deeply layered character."
Emraan Hashmi was last seen in Haq, alongside Yami Gautam. His next release is Awarapan 2, a sequel to his 2007 cult classic Awarapan.
