Dhanush has unveiled the first look of Thamizh Murugan, his fifth collaboration with Vetri Maaran, portraying Murugan as the eternal protector and king of Tamil people. The promo shows a warrior on an elephant wielding a vel, underscoring the deity’s Tamil roots. The announcement comes amid debate over Jr NTR’s upcoming film on the deity, criticised for describing Murugan as “Born in North.”
Actor and director Dhanush announced his next collaboration with director Vetri Maaran on July 10 with a first-look video. Sharing the first look of the film, which is titled Thamizh Murugan, on social media, Dhanush wrote: “The Eternal Protector, Warrior, THE KING & LEADER of the Thamizh people and lands.”
The first look promo shows a man on an elephant, hinted to be Dhanush, surrounded by a large army, wielding a vel, the sacred spear associated with Lord Murugan.
The film is produced by Dhanush's production house Wunderbar Films in association with Production Miles To Go. Music is composed by Sai Abhyankkar, who is simultaneously scoring Pradeep Ranganathan's debut production. No director of photography, editor or release timeline has been officially announced.
The announcement arrives days after NT Rama Rao Jr and director Trivikram Srinivas revealed their upcoming collaboration (referred to as God of War), also centred on Lord Murugan. The NTR-Trivikram announcement generated its own controversy when a section of social media users in Tamil Nadu took issue with the phrase "Born in North" in the project's announcement material, arguing it conflicted with Tamil traditions surrounding Murugan as a deity belonging to Tamil land. The Thamizh Murugan announcement frames Dhanush's Murugan explicitly as a Tamil figure rooted in Tamil literature.
Thamizh Murugan marks the fifth collaboration between Dhanush and Vetri Maaran. They previously worked together on Polladhavan (2007), Aadukalam (2011), Vada Chennai (2018) and Asuran (2019). Aadukalam won six National Film Awards, including Best Director for Vetri Maaran and Best Actor for Dhanush. Asuran earned Dhanush a second National Award for Best Actor.
Dhanush's upcoming projects includes Om, which stars Mammootty, Sai Pallavi, Naseeruddin Shah, Indrans and Sreeleela, releasing on October 16. He was last seen in Vignesh Raja's Tamil heist action drama Kara (2026).
