Jana Nayagan, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s final film before full-time politics, has finally cleared the CBFC with an A certificate on July 9 after months of scrutiny and delay. The 3-hour-3-minute H. Vinoth-directed drama, produced by KVN Productions, will release worldwide on July 24, following a leak, a forged certificate controversy and intense public tracking of its censor battle.
Jana Nayagan, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s final acting role before entering politics, has finally received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification on July 9, months after it was first submitted for clearance. The film’s ‘A’ certification and details have been uploaded to the CBFC's official website.
The film's release date has been confirmed by Suprith Mohan, business head and producer at KVN Productions, who informed SCREEN that the film will release worldwide on July 24.
CBFC's website lists the film's runtime as 3 hours and 3 minutes. The detailed list of cuts, if any, has not yet been made public.
Originally, the film was scheduled to release earlier this year on January 9, timed to meet Pongal festivities and positioned as Vijay's farewell to cinema before his political debut with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party. The certification process, which began when the film was submitted to the CBFC in December 2025, ran into delays, including when a member of the examining committee raised concerns about certain scenes potentially hurting public sentiments.
The prolonged certification period faced by the film has become one of the most closely tracked developments in Tamil cinema in 2026.
In the midst of the delay, the film faced a further setback in April when a high-definition print leaked online ahead of any scheduled theatrical release or certification. Authorities subsequently made arrests in connection with the piracy case.
Recently, a forged CBFC certificate also circulated widely on social media in the days before the actual clearance, claiming the film had been granted an 'A' certificate. The account that posted the certificate later confirmed that the certificate was fabricated. It was later found to have been created using the censor certificate from Vijay's earlier film Leo as a template.
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is produced by Venkat K. Narayana under KVN Productions, the same banner behind Toxic and Karavali. The film stars Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj and Narain. Music is by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography by Sathyan Sooryan and editing by Pradeep E. Ragav.
