Exclusive | Cannes 2026: Tara Sutaria on 'Toxic': 'Being Led By a Woman On Set Makes a World of Difference'

During her debut at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, Tara Sutaria gets candid reflecting on her new film 'Toxic' and what it’s like to work on a women-led set

At the 79th Cannes Film festival, and the actor’s first, Tara Sutaria engaged in a conversation with THR India, opening up about her upcoming film Toxic, how it has been the joy of her life, and the rarity of celebrating the coming together of women in film.

When asked about the pause in her presence on-screen right after Apurva, the actor says, “It doesn’t bother me to do less work, I’d rather do good work. I’d rather do 10 Apurvas than do anything else,” in a response that perfectly embodies a sense of purpose she has gained with experience in the industry, and speaks for why she chose to be part of a film like Toxic.

The actor speaks fondly of her experience filming Toxic, talking with a sense of sheer fulfilment about the monumental role of women and their coming together in the various stages of their careers.

“All of the women in this film are fascinating. Everyone is fabulous and fearless, and we all have such exciting personal styles in this, both visually and stylistically."

"To witness all of us come together at different ages and stages of our lives and careers, and really celebrate each scene is incredible. We (the women) weren't together in many scenes, but when we were, I just sat and observed because it’s so rare,” she says.

"Yash is an incredible co-star and human being. I want to be on sets that are led with integrity, purpose and intention, and we have that with both Geetu Mohandas and Yash. To be led by a woman (director) on set really makes a world of difference."

“I think it’s globally going to be something that people don’t expect, certainly,” Sutaria adds, as she elaborates on the representation of courage, power, fearlessness, and the unique style the women in the film carry.

She believes what most of us do; that life is short, that we should only do things we find worthwhile and appeal to us in more ways than one, and that it is okay not to get consumed by the race everyone wants to be part of.

“It doesn’t bother me to do less work, I’d rather do good work…which is why doing Toxic to me is so satisfactory, it’s so pleasing,” she expresses.

Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups has been rescheduled from its June release window. The film, directed by Geetu Mohandas, stars Yash alongside NayantharaKiara AdvaniHuma QureshiRukmini Vasanth, and Tara Sutaria. Shot in Kannada and English, the film will also release in dubbed versions in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. The film is produced by KVN Productions and Monster Mind Creations.
