After making her Cannes debut in 2019, followed by her appearance in 2023, Diana Penty has returned to the French Riviera for the third time this year at the Cannes Film Festival. And while film festivals are so much more than just the red carpet and what those in attendance wear, the actress knows just how easy it might be for one to miss the point.
“I think I’ve come to terms with it,” Penty tells The Hollywood Reporter India, when asked how she looks at the perennial spotlight on red carpet glam. “A large part of the entertainment industry as a whole is very centred around looks and aesthetics and the physical appearance, and that’s been the case through the ages."
She states that while she appreciates the compliments, labelling them as both sweet and humble, there are moments she wishes there was more to how people see her. “I wish there were a little more. Not just based on my physical appearance, but maybe the work I do, maybe what I stand for, my personality,” she says, adding, “there is so much more to me than just the way I look.”
The actress also opens up about making peace with ageing. “Let’s all accept the fact that we’re going to age, and we’re not going to eventually be in our prime,” she says. “There’s so much more to us. It’s the work we do, it’s our values, our ethics, what we stand for, our personalities, what we bring to the table, how we make people feel, kindness… there’s just so much to us," she says.
Penty has known of a time when social media wasn’t even a thing at Cannes. “When I debuted, there was no social media,” Penty recalls. “It was such a nicer time. Now it’s just permanent. There is no switching off, which is exhausting. The pressure is a lot. It can get to you very quickly. Even though I’m generally calm, it still gets to me,” says Penty, when asked about how she handles constant comments on how she looks and what she chooses to wear.
However, Penty’s mantra is quite simple. She prefers to stay calm and believe in tomorrow. "Whatever we were not able to do today, we’ll do tomorrow. Everything else, I’ve realised in life, is manageable, is fixable. We’ll find a solution, and we'll work our way around it."
When asked how she defines excellence, the actress says it would have meant success and visibility around five to seven years ago,. Now, excellence to her means showing up, consistency, and continuing to grow and be curious. “I think that over a period of time my idea of excellence has evolved, just as I have,” she concludes.
