Indian cinema continued to make a strong impression at the Cannes Film Festival 2026, with actors and filmmakers turning heads through fashion, film announcements and international premieres at the prestigious event on the French Riviera.
Actor Tara Sutaria officially marked her Cannes debut on May 13 with a look inspired by vintage Hollywood glamour. Styled by Tanya Ghavri, Tara wore a striking black-and-white midi gown from Helsa for her first appearance at the festival. Sharing glimpses from Cannes on social media, the actor wrote that she was thrilled to be invited to the festival and honoured at the Red Sea Film Foundation’s Women in Cinema Gala. The gala celebrates women making significant contributions to global cinema and has emerged as one of Cannes’ key parallel events.
Alia Bhatt, meanwhile, continued to dominate the fashion conversation at Cannes with a series of striking appearances. After unveiling five looks earlier at the festival, the actor revealed her sixth ensemble — a sculpted off-shoulder custom gown by Tarun Tahiliani featuring intricate brocade detailing. The silhouette blended Victorian-style corsetry with Indian drape traditions. Alia wore the outfit for a special dinner honouring Hollywood icons Jane Fonda and Gong Li, where she was seen alongside celebrities including Eva Longoria, Heidi Klum and Aja Naomi King.
Earlier during the festival, Alia attended the screening of La Vie D’Une Femme in a lavender floor-length gown paired with a lace choker. She was also spotted in an ivory saree-inspired ensemble at the French Riviera and later joined filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker at the Bharat Pavilion to unveil the official poster and creative concept for the 57th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).
Actor Kalyani Priyadarshan also began her Cannes journey with a minimalist fashion statement at the Indian Pavilion. Opting for understated elegance over dramatic couture, Kalyani chose a chic all-white ensemble featuring a sharply tailored sleeveless blazer-style top with structured lapels and a deep V-neckline.
Beyond fashion, Tamil cinema also found representation at Cannes through filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj. The director is set to make his acting debut with DC, directed by Arun Matheswaran, and the film’s trailer is scheduled to premiere at the ongoing festival.
Starring Wamiqa Gabbi as the female lead, DC marks Lokesh’s first full-fledged acting role. Both Lokesh and Arun are currently attending Cannes for the trailer launch, adding to India’s growing presence at the global film festival.
