After 'Sitaare Zameen Par' finishes its theatrical run, the film will be available for pay-per-view on YouTube two months later
Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan is aiming to revolutionise the current release model of films in India today. According to well-placed industry sources, Khan is keen to roll out a pay-per-view model for his upcoming comedy drama Sitaare Zameen Par, which is aiming for a June 20 theatrical release.
In the current scenario, Hindi films premiere on OTT eight weeks after their theatrical release, which many in the trade, including Khan, have criticised. The actor had previously noted how the audience no longer feels compelled to visit cinemas when they know a film will be available on OTT platforms within weeks.
The Hollywood Reporter India has learnt that to combat this, the actor wants to test a disruptive new model: After Sitaare Zameen Par finishes its theatrical run, the film will be available for pay-per-view on YouTube two months later.
"Aamir doesn't want to release his films directly on streaming after their theatrical run, as it discourages viewers from watching movies on the big screen. It is also a reason why there is no streaming logo on the poster of Sitaare Zameen Par," a well-placed source said.
According to an insider, Khan had earlier intended to stream Laal Singh Chaddha (2022) six months after its theatrical run. The film was released in August 2022, and the initial plan was for the Advait Chandan-directorial to hit Netflix around January 2023. But the film ended up streaming after eight weeks.
"The decision involves multiple factors. Of course, there is a perception that non-spectacle films are better suited for OTT platforms, which has led many to skip them in theaters. Pay-per-view, however, creates a cinema-like urgency, as viewers would need to pay specifically for the film rather than accessing it freely through a subscription model. This consumer-centric approach benefits both viewers and producers, giving the latter more control over their content. Aamir wants to see how this plays out, so we shall know details in the coming weeks," the insider added.
Directed by director RS Prasanna of Kalyana Samayal Saadham (2013) and Shubh Mangal Saavdan (2017) fame, the film is produced by Aamir Khan Productions. Sitaare Zameen Par is touted to be a comedy-drama exploring the lives of people with different abilities.
