Vivek Soni’s Netflix drama explores equality, emotional vulnerability and the unravelling of traditional values.
Netflix’s upcoming romantic drama Aap Jaisa Koi, starring R Madhavan and Fatima Sana Shaikh, attempts to peel back the layers of companionship, patriarchy, and personal transformation through the unlikely pairing of a reserved 42-year-old Sanskrit teacher (Madhavan) and a free-spirited woman a decade younger (Shaikh).
Directed by Vivek Soni, who made Meenakshi Sundareshwar, and written by Radhika Anand and Jehan Handa, the film is set between Calcutta and Jamshedpur. Madhavan plays Shrirenu Tripathi, a quiet, conservative man living with his family, who is nudged into the world of modern romance when he meets Madhu Bose (Shaikh), a confident, independent woman with a firm sense of self. What begins as a cautious courtship soon evolves into an emotional reckoning as both characters are forced to navigate the expectations of family and the boundaries of partnership.
The trailer, launched on June 25, reveals a slow-burning conflict: as Shrirenu and Madhu fall in love and prepare to marry, his traditional household begins to take issue with her lifestyle — from her views on marriage to her social habits. When Shrirenu echoes similar sentiments, suggesting everything is acceptable “within limits,” Madhu responds with a pointed question: “Why should you decide my limit?” The film leans into this conversation around limits: who gets to define them, and how patriarchy continues to be exercised, even under the guise of politeness and concern.
Describing his role, Madhavan said: “Aap Jaisa Koi is unlike any love story I’ve done before. It’s quiet, awkward, and deeply human. Shrirenu is one of the most complex characters I’ve played… he is rich with emotion underneath.”
Fatima Sana Shaikh added, “Playing Madhu was incredibly special. We often associate strength and confidence with masculinity, but Madhu embodies these qualities with such softness and femininity… it felt quite therapeutic.”
Produced by Dharmatic Entertainment, the digital content arm of Dharma Productions, Aap Jaisa Koi will premiere on Netflix on July 11. The cast also includes Ayesha Raza, Manish Chaudhari, and Namit Das.
