Born on August 22, 1934, Achyut Potdar lived a life as remarkable as his roles
Veteran actor Achyut Potdar, beloved for his memorable line “Arey bhai, kehna kya chahte ho?” in 3 Idiots, passed away on Monday, August 18, 2025, in Thane at the age of 91. The cause of death has not been officially disclosed, though reports suggest he was hospitalised recently due to age-related complications. His funeral will be held on August 19 in Thane.
Born on August 22, 1934, Potdar lived a life as remarkable as the roles he portrayed. Before stepping into cinema, he had served in the Indian Army, worked as a professor in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, and later held a position at Indian Oil Corporation. It wasn’t until the age of 44 that he embraced acting, turning what began as a serious hobby into a prolific second career.
Over four decades, Potdar featured in more than 125 films, 95 television serials, 26 plays and 45 advertisements. Known for his natural screen presence and nuance, he became a familiar face in Hindi and Marathi cinema. He was particularly known for his association with filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, appearing in many of his films, including 3 Idiots, Parinda, 1942: A Love Story, Mission Kashmir and Lage Raho Munna Bhai.
Potdar's extensive filmography includes acclaimed titles such as Ardh Satya, Tezaab, Dilwale, Yeh Dillagi, Rangeela, Vaastav, Parineeta, Dabangg 2, Ferrari Ki Sawaari and Ventilator. On television, he left his mark with shows like Wagle Ki Duniya, Majha Hoshil Na, Mrs. Tendulkar and Bharat Ki Khoj.
Tributes poured in following the news of his passing. Star Pravah’s official Instagram handle remembered him with a heartfelt note: “His smile, simplicity and honesty in every role will always be remembered.”
For audiences, Achyut Potdar was that reassuring face on screen—sometimes a professor, sometimes a father, sometimes the quiet man in the background who still managed to leave a mark. His journey from an army officer and professor to one of cinema’s most recognisable character actors is a reminder that it’s never too late to begin again.
