Sunjay Kapur passed away due to a sudden heart attack on Thursday
Sunjay J Kapur, an Indian industrialist and the former husband of Hindi film actress Karisma Kapoor, passed away on Thursday in the UK, following a sudden heart attack.
Kapur was the chairman and non-executive director of Sona Comstar, an automotive technology firm. In a statement, the company expressed its grief. “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of Mr. Sunjay J. Kapur, Chairman and Non-Executive Director of Sona Comstar, following a sudden heart attack in England, UK, on 12th June 2025, at the age of 53,” the statement read. “A visionary leader, Mr. Kapur played a pivotal role in shaping Sona Comstar into a global mobility technology company built on innovation, sustainability, and purpose."
The company added that details regarding memorial arrangements will be announced soon. "On behalf of Sona Comstar, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those influenced by his remarkable life. We want to assure our customers, employees, and shareholders that our current operations and prospects remain unchanged as we honour his legacy. We are committed to upholding his legacy by advancing our mission and the values he instilled in Sona Comstar," the company wrote on X.
Sunjay and Kapoor, who filed for divorce through mutual consent in 2014, shared children Samaira and Kiaan. Their divorce was finalised in 2016. But according to reports, an "acrimonious legal battle" ensued during the proceedings. In her divorce plea, Karisma reportedly accused Sunjay of domestic abuse.
In the wake of the news, Kapoor’s sister Kareena Kapoor Khan, her husband Saif Ali Khan, and close friend and actress Malaika Arora reportedly arrived at Karisma's residence late on Thursday night for support. Karisma Kapoor was last seen in Homi Adajania's Murder Mubarak (2024), a Netflix film co-starring Pankaj Tripathi, Sara Ali Khan, Vijay Varma, and Dimple Kapadia, among others.
