The veteran director was speaking at the closing ceremony of Kerala’s film conclave in Thiruvananthapuram
Veteran director Adoor Gopalakrishnan made several controversial statements in his speech on Sunday, August 3 during the closing ceremony of Kerala’s film conclave in Thiruvananthapuram. He spoke about the State Government’s initiative to promote SC/ST and women filmmakers and called for better training before being allotted funds.
According to a report in The Hindu, the director said, “The government is providing ₹1.5 crore for filmmakers from the SC/ST communities to make films. I told the Chief Minister the government is paving the way for corruption, but nothing changed. The intent is good, but they should be given at least three months of intensive training to make films. All the filmmakers who have made films under this project have complaints about it. They should be made aware that these are public funds. The amount should be reduced to ₹50 lakh. This money is not meant to make commercial films.”
The director stated that he had not yet made a film that cost more than ₹2 crore and that called for stricter regulations. In response to his comments, State Minister of Fisheries, Culture & Youth Affairs Saji Cherian is said to have spoken up about how, “…filmmakers from the SC/ST community had not got an opportunity to rise to the mainstream. And how many women have made films in Malayalam cinema? This is one of the best projects that the government has undertaken.”
This was detailed in a report in TheNewsMinute, apart from the procedure through which these filmmakers were chosen. In January 2023, Adoor Gopalakrishnan had resigned from his position as chairman of the KR Narayanan film institute following a series of protests by students which demanded for the resignation of director Shankar Mohan for caste discrimination. Back then, Adoor Gopalakrishnan had called out “vested interests” who were opposing decisions in the institute to make it “more disciplined.”
Meanwhile, Dalit activist Dinu Veyil has filed a complaint under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act with the Museum Police in Thiruvananthapuram and the Kerala State SC/ST Commission against the filmmaker.
