Filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon recently faced backlash over his comments on anti-caste films. In an earlier interview, he had stated that such films are no longer relevant since caste discrimination does not exist today, adding that it is also why filmmakers set these stories in the 1980s and 1990s.

His remarks also came at a time when reports of honour killings and caste discrimination were still emerging in the country, leading to major social media outrage. This led the filmmaker to clarify his stance at the Bengaluru International Film Festival (BIFFes).

Speaking at BIFFes, Gautham explained that his words were misinterpreted. He emphasised that he treats everyone equally and does not associate his surname with any caste. He expressed concern that films focusing on caste discrimination could deepen societal divides, as audiences might align with different factions.

Menon also pointed out that many recent films focus only on caste issues, and he would like to see a wider variety of stories being told. The filmmaker elaborated that continuously highlighting caste rifts could reinforce divisions rather than bridge them. He clarified that his intent was not to dismiss the importance of such narratives, but to encourage storytelling that reflects contemporary society rather than being confined to past settings.

He added, "My comment got blown out of proportion. I wanted to say that I have been seeing such stories set in the 80s and 90s. I want to see the stories of today.”

As a director, Gautham’s much-awaited project, Dhruva Natchathiram starring Vikram, is expected to release later this year. He last helmed the Malayalam film Dominic and The Ladies Purse starring Mammootty.

As an actor, he will next be seen in Vijay's Jana Nayagan (2025). At BIFFes, Gautham delivered a masterclass titled Art of Cinema, where he reiterated that his comments were blown out of proportion.
