Pushpa won't back down, but, if everything falls in place, it will shatter several box-office records. Allu Arjun's Pushpa 2: The Rule has finally hit the big screens and as expected, there are fireworks in the exhibition sector.

The Sukumar directorial, which also stars Rashmika Mandanna and Fahadh Faasil, has debuted on a solid note across the world, with the action-drama aiming to re-write box office history. According to trade insiders The Hollywood Reporter India spoke to, Pushpa 2 will create new benchmarks for the opening day in India as the film has clicked with its target audience.

The numbers behind 'Pushpa 2: The Rule'

To begin with, Pushpa 2 has seen one of the widest theatrical releases of all time as it opened on 12,000 screens across the world. After a massive six-city tour in India, the makers opened their booking ahead of the release and the film broke records even there.

Ashish Saksena, COO - Cinemas, BookMyShow, revealed how Pushpa 2 created history on the platform by crossing a staggering three million tickets in advance sales, the highest ever in India, beating mighty pan-India blockbusters like Kalki 2898 AD, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion and K.G.F: Chapter 2.

According to BookMyShow, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi-NCR and Pune were the areas where the most number of tickets were booked on the platform.

An estimated figure for the ticket sales — in all languages — was a whopping 100 cr for day one, out of which the original Telugu version was leading with nearly 50 cr, followed by the Hindi version at over 30 cr, surpassing previous record holders like Jawan (30 cr), Pathaan (27 cr) and Animal which was around 24 cr. This is what Pushpa 2 had earned even before a single show was played.

In terms of advance booking at national cinema chains — PVR, Inox, Cinepolis — for day one, Pushpa 2 sold over four lakh tickets till December 4, a day before the release. With this, it clinched the seventh spot on the list, which features Baahubali 2 (Hindi) as the number-one film with nearly 6,50,000 ticket sales.

What are the records the Allu Arjun film is chasing?

Pushpa 2 is looking at an all-India opening in the range of 165 to 180 cr nett, with an addition of 60 to 70 cr (gross) from the international territories. Trade is expecting the film to clock in a global gross of 230 to 240 cr, which will be historic as it would become the only film to achieve that benchmark, surpassing SS Rajamouli's Baahubali 2. The Prabhas-Rana Daggubati starrer had minted 200 cr globally on day one in 2017 — a record that Pushpa 2 will easily cruise past.

Even in the Hindi market, Pushpa 2 is looking to create history as it is steadily marching towards the mighty numbers set by Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan in 2023. The Atlee directorial currently sits on top as the highest Hindi opener of all time with 65 cr.

According to trade sources, the trend of Pushpa 2 indicates that it would comfortably open around 60 cr mark in Hindi on day one, and may go higher than 65 cr depending on the walk-ins. If that happens, it might then topple Jawan and emerge as the biggest opener of all time in Hindi, that too on a non-holiday Thursday.

Currently, the top five openers in Hindi are Jawan ( 65 cr), Stree 2 (55.40 cr), Pathaan (55 cr), Animal (54.75 cr), and Yash-starrer KGF: Chapter 2, which currently holds the record of the highest box-office opener for a south Indian dubbed film in Hindi at 53 cr. Pushpa 2 could take over the record from KGF: Chapter 2, which it has held for two years.

After such an opening, director Sukumar and superstar Allu Arjun would hope their action-drama keeps up the momentum as it heads towards an extended weekend to create more records in the days ahead.
