Diljit Dosanjh has taken Punjab’s most provocative musician global. Netflix’s Amar Singh Chamkila, directed by Imtiaz Ali, is India’s only title nominated at the 53rd International Emmy Awards, earning nods in two major categories: Best Performance by an Actor for Dosanjh and TV Movie/Mini-Series for the film itself.

The biopic follows the life of Amar Singh Chamkila, often called Punjab’s original rock star, who scandalised and mesmerised audiences in the 1980s before being assassinated at the age of 27. Imtiaz Ali’s film explores not just Chamkila’s meteoric rise, but also the politics, desire and danger that made his music both irresistible and incendiary.

For Dosanjh, stepping into Chamkila’s shoes was as personal as it was challenging. “I feel truly honored Amar Singh Chamkila, an artist from Punjab, is being recognized and talked about at a global level on such a prestigious stage like the International Emmys,” the actor-singer said. “This nomination is not just for me, but for the entire legacy of Chamkila. I am grateful to Imtiaz Ali Sir for choosing me for the role.”

Ali, who shot the film entirely in Punjab, called it “a wonderful grassroots experience,” praising Dosanjh for disappearing completely into the role. “Not for a moment on the shoot was he not Chamkila,” the director said, calling the nomination a win for the entire cast and crew.

The film’s music, composed by A.R. Rahman with lyrics by Irshad Kamil, has been celebrated for capturing the soul of Punjab, adding another layer to Chamkila’s story.

The nominations cement Netflix’s place as the home for ambitious Indian storytelling with global resonance. For Dosanjh, who has steadily built a crossover career through music and film, the recognition is a milestone — one that brings Chamkila’s story to the world stage three decades after his death.
