In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, actor-director Anurag Kashyap recalled the South Indian movie that changed his life.

Kashyap began by recalling that he did watch dubbed versions of movies starring actors such as Rajinikanth and Chiranjeevi — giving the example of Rajnikanth’s Paayum Puli (1983). “He was a big surprise when Jeet Hamaari (1983) came out,” said Kashyap.

“But for me, the first life-altering South Indian film I saw consciously, was strangely Upendra’s Kannada movie A (1998),” he reminisced. And it was none other than director and screenwriter Ram Gopal Varma who recommended it to him.

He added, “Ram Gopal Varma suggested that I watch A and Om (1995).” These movies left a lasting impression in the director’s mind and led him to visit Mangalore — the sets Upendra was shooting on at the time. “I went there very quietly,” said the director with a smile.

A was a film that caught Ram Gopal Varma by surprise. “And that’s why he showed it to me, actually. After that, I later discovered Sethu (1999) by myself,” he added.

Interestingly, Kashyap mentioned that he’s watched all of these films in their original languages without subtitles, despite not being a native speaker. He continued, “I understood it; I felt it.”

“And then [director] Selvaraghavan’s Tamil film with [actor] Dhanush — Kaadhal Kondein (2003) — I saw without subtitles because I was mixing Paanch (2003) at the time in Chennai. I went to watch this film that everyone was talking about,” he recalled.

“[Actor] Vijay’s film — Youth (2002) — was also being shot in the same studio,” Kashyap said, remembering a song sequence starring the actor and Simran. He mentioned that it was also around then, that he became friends with director Gautham Vasudev Menon. Reminiscing about his time in Chennai in the early 2000s, another distinct memory Kashyap holds is of meeting Rajinikanth while he was shooting Baba (2002).
